Maintenance Technician Salary and Job Outlook

Maintenance Technicians who are professionally trained and certified are sought after for residential work on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, electrical systems and appliances.

It's not possible to maintain and repair these systems without training on the old as well as new systems found in homes, apartment buildings, businesses, factories, hospitals and government offices. Apprentices usually earn about half of the wage paid to experienced workers. As they learn to do more, their pay increases.

Maintenance and repair work is closely related to the demand for home and building maintenance. Maintenance Technicians will continue to be needed to upgrade and renovate older homes. Homeowners may invest in projects to accommodate their future living needs, allowing them to remain in their homes after retirement or to sell their property.

In addition to the work required for residential properties, maintenance and repair is also needed for nonresidential properties. For example, Maintenance Technicians will be needed to work on older commercial and public buildings. Older homes and buildings typically require more maintenance or repair, especially for pipes, insulation, electrical, and air-conditioning and heating systems.

The median annual wage for Maintenance Technicians was $46,700 in May 2023.
The median pay per hour before overtime was $22.45 in May 2023.

The majority of Maintenance Technicians work full time, including evenings or weekends. Some are on call for emergency repairs.

Employment of Maintenance Technicians is projected to grow 4 percent from 2022 to 2032, about as fast as the average for all occupations.

About 152,400 openings for Maintenance Technicians are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace technicians who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.
